Rockets Owner Alexander Still Has Faith

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle writes that Leslie Alexander, owner of the Houston Rockets since 1993, still has faith in GM Carroll Dawson and coach Rudy Tomjanovich and the team they've put together. One would have to wonder with a team that is a disappointing 15 and 30 (and heading to the lottery, Alexander concedes), after winning 45 games last season. But, Alexander realizes that the Rockets have had major injuries to contend with and believes the team will be very good for a very long time once healthy.

Note to Shaq: Talk to Kermit

The Sacramento Bee has a well-written and researched article on the fate of Kermit Washington. For those of you who are too young to remember or who have forgotten because of dead brain cells, Washington was the L.A. Laker who crushed Rudy Tomjanovich's face in 1977 with a blow that has been called "the hardest punch in the history of mankind."

After that momentous right hand, Washington "saw his career start circling the bowl like a deceased goldfish." (Ya gotta just love that line.)

Washington has suffered as much as anyone from the incident and yet he has put an incredible amount back into his community over the years. And don't think he's gone soft either. He still works out every day and, at age 50, says there is nobody stronger in the NBA today. He can still bench-press 400 pounds and even won a beer keg-toss at a Scottish Games a couple of years ago. Anyone need a power forward?

Walt Williams Out Till All-Star Game

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports that, though Walt Williams is now eligible to come off the injured list, he will probably remain there until after the All-Star Game. Williams badly sprained his ankle. The Rockets first game after the break is February 12th, against the Grizzlies, but they don't play again until the 16th, so the Rockets may opt to have him miss that game as well.

Fortunately, Kelvin Cato has been on a tear recently to make up some for the loss of Williams and Kenny Thomas' 3-game suspension. Cato has had five double-doubles over the past six games.
